James X. Sullivan, University of Notre Dame Professor of Economics and co-founder of LEO, recently co-authored an Opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal highlighting America's progress in addressing and confronting poverty on a national level. He and co-author, Dr. Bruce D. Meyer of the University of Chicago, demonstrate how the poverty level has "declined significantly over the past 50 years." Sullivan and Meyer have developed a consumption based poverty measure to more accurately determine poverty rates across the United States.
