Uplifting Parents

Project Type: Self-Sufficiency

Project Stage: In Progress

There are 11 million children under 18 in the United States living with a single mother under the age of 40. Many single mothers lack the educational background to successfully compete in the job market but, given the demands of parenthood, are unable to complete a college degree. The Uplifting Parents Program (Program UP), a mentoring program for single parents run by Catholic Social Services (CSS) Rapid City, was created to empower single-parent families by providing resources to support their advancement in education or job training, so that they may build a better life for themselves and their children. LEO is evaluating the impact of Program UP on educational, employment, and public benefits outcomes using a randomized controlled trial research design.
