Project Type: Education
Project Stage: In Progress
The early years are critical to educational success. Influential empirical work has established the early emergence of achievement gaps by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status, and this research consistently demonstrates that gaps are already present at kindergarten entry and that they persist throughout the schooling years. LEO is evaluating Ready4K, a text-messaging program that encourages parents of young children to support their literacy development. Research-based text messages show parents how to create everyday learning opportunities in fun and easy ways that enhance their routine home literacy behaviors. This study will build upon existing research to explore the effect of a summer supplement to the Ready4K curriculum on school readiness. In addition to the Ready4K core program, some parents will receive innovative, new summer programming in the three months leading up to their children’s kindergarten entry designed to curb summer slide and link families to local resources.
