Reading for Life has been recognized as one of only three programs focused on helping disadvantaged youth recommended by the White House. Earlier this year, the Council of Economic Advisers was tasked with researching and recommending programs with concrete evidence of reducing violence and providing second chances to disadvantaged youth.
The Reading for Life program diverts young non-violent offenders from the juvenile justice system with a unique and innovative program where low-status juveniles study works of literature in small groups led by trained volunteer mentors. It began in 2010 in partnership with the Juvenile Justice Center in Saint Joseph County, Indiana. LEOs evaluation of Reading for Life demonstrated impressive and statistically significant drops in future arrests.
